We do this to help keep costs down for our clients, and because we too live and work in these communities. We are proud to call Farmington Valley "home" and to be able to serve our neighbors with the highest quality tree services.
According to Wikipedia, Avon was first settled in 1645 as part of the neighboring town of Farmington. The area was known as "Northington," AKA, "North of Farmington," which happens to be why "Southington" happens to be named. "Southington," meaning "South of Farmington."
In 1750, the Avon Parish was established in the northern part of Farmington to support a Congregational Church that was more accessible to the local population. The first pastor of the church was Ebenezer Booge, a graduate of Yale Divinity School who arrived in 1751.
The opening of the Farmington Canal in 1828 brought new business to Avon. The canal ran roughly parallel to Hopmeadow Street, perpendicularly intersectingTalcott Mountain Turnpike (today's Albany Turnpike/Route 44), linking commerce between both Hartford to Albany, New York and Northhampton MA to New Haven CT. Avon was officially founded in 1830 and was named after a county in Avon, England.
Canton is among the "youngest" of the four towns. Among Canton's other attractions, Canton has one of the most interesting local museums in Canton Historical Museum, The museum is a local gem if you have an opportunity to visit.
The museum is located in Collinsville on the banks of the Farmington River, just up the road from the Collins Company Axe Factory.
Farmington is the oldest of the four towns. According to Wikipedia, just 20 years and one young generation after English immigrants landed at Plymouth MA in 1620, Farmington was established in 1640, making it the oldest inland European settlement west of the Connecticut River and the twelfth oldest community in CT. Settlers were drawn to the area because of its rich soil, location along the floodplain of the Farmington River, and valley geography.
Simsbury was originally founded in 1670 by Settlers from Windsor CT, 50 short years / 2 generations after the first Colonists arrived in Plymouth MA in 1620. According to Wikipedia, Simsbury is named after one of its founders, someone named, “Sim.” What an interesting fact!
Simsbury's downtown along Hopmeadow St parallels the original canal that ran from Northampton, Massachusetts to New Haven, Connecticut from 1828 to approximately 1848. The canal was replaced by a train line from circa 1850 to the 1980's that ran along the linear park we all know today as the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.
